Tesla referral link vs referral code — what's the difference?
They're two forms of one thing. Here's the only difference that matters — and why the link is usually easier.
People type both "tesla referral code" and "tesla referral link", assume they're different perks, and get confused. They're not. A referral code is a short owner identifier; a referral link is that same code wrapped in a ts.la/… URL. Clicking the link pre-applies the code for you.

Referral code
The short owner identifier by itself. Same benefit, but you'd apply it manually. Given only a code, put it after ts.la/ to make your own link, then open that.
The one practical difference
A link removes a manual step. Instead of hunting for a "referral code" field during checkout — which Tesla's flow has increasingly de-emphasised — you click the link first and let the code ride along with your session.
