The $10,000 auto-loan-interest deduction and your Tesla, worked out for 2026
A new federal deduction lets buyers who finance a Tesla write off loan interest — up to $10,000 a year. Here's what it's actually worth, stacked with your referral link.
If you're financing a Tesla in 2026, there's a tax change most buyers haven't heard of yet. The 2025 federal reconciliation act — the same law that ended the $7,500 purchase credit on 30 September 2025 (see our companion post, life after the $7,500 credit) — also created a new above-the-line deduction for interest paid on a loan for a new, personal-use vehicle with final assembly in the United States, for tax years 2025 through 2028. The cap is $10,000 of interest per year, and it phases out above roughly $100,000 of modified adjusted gross income for single filers (about $200,000 married filing jointly). Confirm the current thresholds before you file — phase-out math changes your real number, and Congress has already moved adjacent EV-related deadlines once this cycle.
This is a separate benefit from — and smaller in most years than — the old $7,500 purchase credit. But it's real money, and it stacks cleanly with the one thing a Tesla referral link guarantees at zero cost: 3 months of free FSD (Supervised) on a Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck.
A worked example
Say you finance $40,000 of a Model Y purchase at 6.5% APR over 60 months — a plausible rate, not a quote; use your own loan's actual terms here. Interest front-loads on an amortizing loan, so first-year interest lands around $2,450 (pull this from your own lender's amortization schedule; every loan differs slightly).
At a 22% marginal federal tax rate, deducting that $2,450 is worth roughly $539 in reduced tax owed. Add the referral link's FSD trial — about $300 at the $99/month FSD (Supervised) subscription price — and you're looking at close to $839 in combined 2026 value, before any state incentive, for two things that cost you nothing extra to claim.
Why this doesn't replace the old credit
Be honest about the math: the federal purchase credit — up to $7,500 — ended 30 September 2025. Nothing has brought it back. The loan-interest deduction and the referral FSD trial are real, but for most buyers they're a fraction of what the old credit covered, and the deduction only helps if you finance — a cash buyer has no loan interest to deduct. If you're weighing loan versus cash for a 2026 order, that's the single biggest thing this new deduction changes about the decision.
Checking your own eligibility before you count on it
Two conditions do the real gatekeeping. First, final assembly location — the deduction only applies to vehicles assembled in the United States, so confirm your specific VIN and trim on the window sticker or Tesla's own documentation rather than assuming every Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck configuration automatically qualifies (assembly plants and sourcing can shift between model years). Second, the deduction is for interest on a loan, not a lease — if you lease instead of finance, this deduction doesn't apply to you at all, full stop, no matter your income.
State income tax is a separate question entirely: this is a federal deduction, and not every state's tax code automatically follows federal changes. If your state has its own income tax, check whether it conforms to this deduction before assuming the same $539-style saving shows up on your state return too.
