What a 2026 Model Y really costs, once every fee is added

Tesla's online configurator shows a vehicle price, but that's rarely your out-the-door total. Because prices, order fees and even destination charges change without notice, we won't quote you a specific dollar figure here and pretend it's still accurate by the time you read this — instead, here's exactly what to add, in order, so you can run the math on your configuration in the design studio today.

The stack, in order

1. Configurator vehicle price — trim, wheels, paint, interior, Full Self-Driving purchase if added. This is the only number the homepage sticker really shows.
2. Order fee — a fixed, refundable-or-not deposit Tesla charges to place the order; check the current amount on your own order screen, since it has changed more than once.
3. Destination and documentation fee — a fixed charge added at checkout, separate from the vehicle price, that Tesla applies to essentially every US delivery.
4. State and local sales tax — varies by state, sometimes by county; a handful of states charge none at all. This is usually the single largest add-on after the vehicle itself.
5. Title and registration — state-set, and often billed separately from the order.

As an illustration only — not a quote — imagine your configurator shows $46,990 including destination. Add a 7% state sales tax and you'd add roughly $3,289, before title and registration. Your own state's rate and Tesla's current fees may be different; treat this as the method, not the number.

Where the referral link and the deduction fit

What's gone from the math

The federal $7,500 purchase credit ended 30 September 2025 and does not apply to a 2026 order (see life after the $7,500 credit). Don't let an old quote or a stale forum post tell you otherwise — check the order summary at checkout, which is the only place that reflects what's actually current.

Full Self-Driving: subscribe or buy?

The configurator lets you add FSD (Supervised) outright as a purchase, or skip it and subscribe monthly later. Adding it at order time raises your vehicle price and therefore your sales tax base too, since tax is calculated on the full purchase price including options. Subscribing later keeps your taxable purchase price lower and lets you try it during your referral link's free 3-month trial before committing to either path — run both totals before you decide, since the tax difference alone can be a meaningful chunk of the FSD price gap.

Trade-in changes the picture too

If you're trading in a vehicle, some states calculate sales tax on the price after the trade-in credit rather than the full configurator price — others don't. That single rule can swing your effective tax bill by hundreds of dollars depending on where you live, so it's worth confirming before you assume a national average applies to your order.
