Cancel and re-order: what survives, and what you have to redo

The short version: nothing carries over. The longer version explains why, and what that costs each side.

Orders get cancelled for ordinary reasons — a trim changed, a delivery date slipped, a household plan changed. The referral question that follows is asked backwards. People ask whether the referral is "still valid". The useful question is what the referral was ever attached to.

What a referral is attached to

The order. Not the account, not the buyer, not the code. So when the order ends, the thing the referral was attached to no longer exists — and a replacement order is a new order, which needs its own referral link opened before it is configured.

What that does to the referrer's side

A referral that has not reached its Grant Date shows as pending. Pending means recognised but not yet granted, and grants follow settled transactions. A cancelled order is not a settled transaction, so the honest expectation is that a pending referral attached to it does not become a grant.

There is a practical upside for the referrer: the 10-per-calendar-year cap counts successful referrals. A referral that never granted has not consumed a slot.

What the buyer keeps

Nothing needs keeping, because nothing was consumed. There is no per-buyer limit on using a referral link, so re-ordering with a link is straightforward. The two things worth knowing:

  • Open a fresh link for the new order. Do not assume the previous session carried anything over — it did not.
  • Re-check the order summary. The benefit line has to be visible on the new order before payment, same as the first time.

The case where re-ordering changes eligibility

Worth checking rather than assuming, because it is the one way a re-order can quietly lose the benefit. Eligibility is decided by what you are buying, and it is trim-specific: Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck in Premium AWD and Cyberbeast trims are in; Model S and Model X have been out since March 2026, and Cybertruck Dual Motor AWD is excluded. A cancellation that becomes a switch from a Model Y to a Model X carries no referral benefit at all, however clean the sequence.

The delivery-date case, which is not a cancellation

Worth separating, because people conflate the two. A slipped delivery date is not a cancellation: the order still exists, the referral is still attached to it, and nothing needs redoing. A change to an existing order — a different colour, different wheels — is likewise usually an edit rather than a new order. What matters is whether the order number survives. If Tesla is editing the order you already have, the referral rides along; if you are being asked to place a new one, treat it as a fresh order and open a link first.

Timing, if the re-order is months away

Open the link when you actually order. A link is not a coupon you hold — it is the route into an ordering session, and the session is what carries the referral. There is no advantage to opening one early, and the credits an eventual referrer receives run their own clocks from the Grant Date regardless.
