Trade-in, finance, referral: the order of operations that keeps the benefit

One ordered checklist. The failure is almost always a sequence error, not a bad code.

Trade-in valuations and finance applications are the two steps most likely to knock a referral off an order, not because either interferes with it, but because both send you out of the ordering flow and back in through a different door.

The rule underneath the checklist

A referral is attached to the order, through the link, at the moment the order is placed. It is not attached to your account, your email address, or the payment method. And it cannot be added afterwards — there is no retroactive fix, which is what makes sequence matter more than anything else on this page.

The sequence

  1. Do the comparison shopping first. Trims, colours, wheels, delivery estimates — all of it, before a referral link is involved. This is the step that generates stray tabs, and stray tabs are how orders get placed without a referral attached.
  2. Get your trade-in number early, separately. A trade-in quote is an input to your budget, not to the referral. Knowing it before you configure means you are not leaving the flow mid-order to go and find it.
  3. Have your finance inputs to hand. Deposit, term, and the monthly figure you are aiming at. Again: inputs, gathered before, not during.
  4. Now open the referral link — last, in a clean tab, immediately before configuring.
  5. Configure once, in that tab. If you must go and check something, come back to the same tab rather than re-entering from a search result.
  6. At the order-review step, read the summary. The referral benefit line must be visible before you pay. This is the only proof that matters.
  7. Only then submit finance details and confirm. The benefit is already attached by this point; the payment path cannot remove it.

Why a trade-in feels like it should interfere

Because both are described as reducing what you pay — so people assume they compete. They do not, and the reason is worth stating precisely: the referral benefit is not money off the car. In North America it is 3 months of FSD (Supervised), a software trial worth about $297 at the $99 monthly rate. It does not reduce the purchase price, the amount financed, the trade-in value, or the sales-tax base. Nothing in a trade-in or finance calculation changes because a referral is attached, and nothing about the referral changes because you are trading a car in.

Where the sequence usually breaks

Two moments, both mundane. The first is the trade-in valuation: it opens in its own flow, and coming back out of it through a bookmark or a search result rather than the original tab is how a referral gets dropped. The second is the finance pre-approval, for the same reason. In both cases nothing rejects the referral — the session that finishes the order simply never had one attached. Gathering both inputs before you open the referral link removes the failure entirely, which is why the checklist above is ordered the way it is.

The two-party case

If someone else places the order — a leasing company, a business account, a family member on their own Tesla account — then the referral attaches to their order or to nothing. Ask the question before signing rather than after: whose account submits the order?

If the summary shows no benefit line

Do not place the order intending to fix it. Close the flow, reopen the referral link, and configure again. Losing a configuration is cheap; losing the benefit is permanent.
