The 7 most common Tesla referral link mistakes — and how to avoid each
Every one of these has actually cost a buyer their benefit in 2026. None of them are hard to avoid once you know to look for them.
Most "referral link mistakes" listicles are generic filler. These seven are specific to how Tesla's program actually works right now, sourced from the program mechanics and dated changes covered throughout this site — not guesses.

Configuring the car before opening the link
The single most common failure. Order of operations matters: open the
ts.la/…link first, then build your configuration in that same tab. Do it backwards and there's no benefit to confirm at checkout. -
Assuming Model S or Model X qualify
They don't. Both were removed from the referral program in March 2026. If you're cross-shopping S or X against a 3, Y or Cybertruck, don't factor a referral benefit into the S/X side of that comparison — there isn't one.

Expecting a cash discount instead of the FSD trial
Tesla's referral program used to include a cash credit; that was replaced by 3 months of free FSD (Supervised) worth about $300 (see what changed in the March 2026 overhaul). If an old forum post or a friend's outdated experience told you to expect a price cut, it's describing a version of the program that no longer exists.

Not checking the order summary before paying
The order review screen is the only place that confirms the benefit actually attached — not the link page, not the configurator. Run the checklist in our checkout walkthrough before you tap Confirm, while you can still fix it by reopening the link.

Confusing a referral code with a referral link
They're the same thing in two forms — a link is just a code wrapped in a

Assuming one link covers both a vehicle and a solar order
It doesn't. A vehicle order and a Solar Panels or Solar Roof order are separate transactions, each needing its own confirmed pass through a referral link. One referral applies per transaction — plan to open the link again for the second order.

Assuming the benefit is identical in every country
It's the FSD (Supervised) trial in the US and Canada, but Supercharging credit in the UK, France and Spain, and in transition in the Netherlands following the RDW's April 2026 FSD approval. Don't take a benefit description written for one market at face value in another — confirm what your country's order summary actually shows.
The one thread through all seven
Six of the seven come down to the same root cause: acting on an assumption instead of checking the current, dated facts. The program has changed materially within 2026 alone — the March overhaul swapped a cash credit for the FSD trial and dropped S/X entirely — so anything you read that isn't dated is a risk.
