Tesla referral link: what changed in the March 2026 program overhaul
If a friend's referral experience from last year doesn't match what you're seeing today, this is why.
Earlier in 2026, before the overhaul, Tesla's referral program paid buyers a $1,000 cash credit on a new Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck. That credit is gone. It was replaced with 3 months of free FSD (Supervised) — worth roughly $300 at the standalone $99/month rate — and separately, Model S and Model X were dropped from the program entirely in March 2026. If someone told you about their referral payout from earlier in the year, or you're going by an old blog post, this is the gap you're seeing.

The buyer-side math: is the new benefit better or worse?
In pure dollar terms, $1,000 cash is worth more than a ~$300 software trial — there's no getting around that comparison. Where the FSD trial claws some of it back is that it costs Tesla nothing incremental to grant (it's compute access, not cash), which may be exactly why it replaced the cash credit. For a buyer who was never going to subscribe to FSD anyway, the new benefit is worth less to you in practice than the old one was. For a buyer who was already curious about FSD (Supervised), the trial at least lets you evaluate roughly $300 of it at no cost before deciding whether to keep it.
Why Model S and Model X lost the benefit
We don't have Tesla's internal reasoning for removing S and X from the program — we can only report that it happened, in March 2026, per our sources below. If you're ordering an S or X today, don't expect a referral link to change your order summary at all; there is currently no buyer benefit tied to either model.
What didn't change
The solar benefit ($400 off a Solar Panels or Solar Roof order) and the referrer-side reward ($250 in Tesla Credits per successful referral, capped at 10 per calendar year) both carried through the overhaul unchanged.
