Cap, calendar year and expiry: the three dates a referrer has to track

Three inputs, one output: whether a reward is still spendable. Set them out as fields and the failure modes become obvious.

The referral programme is usually described as a benefit. For anyone sharing a code it is closer to a small scheduling problem with three inputs. Get them on one screen and the ways people lose rewards stop being mysterious.

Field 1 — the calendar-year cap

Only the first 10 successful referrals in a calendar year pay the referrer. The counter is not a rolling twelve months; it resets on 1 January. Two consequences follow, and they point in opposite directions. A referrer who hits ten in October has nine idle weeks and then a fresh allowance. A referrer at nine in late December has one slot that expires with the year — and a friend who orders on 2 January starts the new year's count instead.

Field 2 — the Grant Date

Not the order date. The Grant Date is when Tesla actually posts the benefit to the account, which is why the app shows a referral as pending between the two. Every clock in the programme starts here, so a long pending window costs nothing: the countdown has not begun.

Field 3 — the expiry, which is two different numbers

The two expiry clocks, both measured from the Grant Date.
Reward typeLife from Grant Date
Tesla Credits12 months
Supercharging miles / kilometres6 months

Conflating those two is the most common factual error in referral writing. They are separate balances on the same account with different deadlines.

The combinations that waste a reward

  1. One referral, then nothing. A single grant runs its clock and lapses. Tesla emails a 30-day warning; that email is the last prompt you get.
  2. Referral number eleven. A completed sale, a happy buyer, and no credit — the cap was already met. Worth knowing before you promise anyone anything.
  3. Charging distance treated like credits. Six months is half the runway people assume, and spending it requires visiting stalls rather than clicking a button.
  4. Credits banked for a purchase that never happens. Redemptions run through the Loot Box and are final, so "saving them for something better" ends at the expiry date, not at a better offer.

The one mechanism that moves a deadline

Earning again. A further successful referral inside the window extends all credits in the account to 12 months from the newest Grant Date — the whole balance moves, not just the new portion. For anyone referring at a steady cadence, expiry effectively stops being a risk. For a one-off referrer it is the only risk.

What the referrer is actually paid

Tesla Credits, capped at ten successful referrals a year. The amount is quoted inconsistently in public reporting — $250 in some places, $500 in others — and this site will not pick one. The figure your account was credited is in your own Tesla app, and that is the only authoritative number. The method for reading it is in how to read your own referrer figure.

What a buyer needs from this page: nothing

All three fields belong to the referrer. A buyer's side is settled at checkout — the benefit either appears on the order summary before payment or it does not, and it cannot be added afterwards. If you are the one ordering, the only date that matters is the one you order on.
