$99 a month: putting a number on three free months of FSD
The benefit stopped being a discount on an option and became a trial of a bill. That makes it easy to price and easy to forget to cancel.
On 14 February 2026 Tesla removed the one-time FSD purchase in North America, leaving a $99 per month subscription. That is the change that made the referral benefit trivially easy to price, and slightly harder to hold onto.

Two qualifications on that number. It is displaced spending, not cash received — it is only worth $297 if you would otherwise have subscribed. And it is before tax: what a subscription actually costs you depends on local sales tax treatment, so the real displaced figure is a little higher than $297 for most buyers.
Where the figure is different
For a buyer who previously purchased Enhanced Autopilot, Tesla cut the subscription to $49 a month in late January 2026. The same three months then displaces about $147. The derivation is in the $49 rate calculation, and it is the single largest correction to the headline number that referral pages routinely miss.
What subscription-only changed structurally
Before February, three free months read as a sample of something purchasable. Now it is a free trial of a recurring bill, and the default at the end is not neutral: doing nothing starts a $99 monthly charge. Nothing dishonest about that, but it does mean the benefit has an administrative component the old framing lacked — the end date. Europe: same pricing move, different referral benefit
Europe and the UK lost the one-time purchase on 22 May 2026, moving to €99 / £99 monthly. Notably the European referral benefit did not become an FSD trial as a result — it remains Supercharging distance, roughly 2,000 km since April 2026. Approval, not pricing, is the gate there: an EU-level discussion in June 2026 was discussion-only, with the next window in October 2026 and EU-wide approval possibly slipping into 2027.
What the tax treatment does to the figure
A subscription is a taxable service in most US jurisdictions, so the real displaced amount is $297 plus whatever sales tax your state applies to digital or vehicle services — which is why this dispatch says "about $297 before tax" rather than quoting a clean number. It is a small correction in absolute terms and a useful reminder about the direction of every estimate on this site: the trial displaces slightly more spending than the headline arithmetic suggests, and the referral benefit is never worth less than the sticker calculation.
What $297 is not
It is not money off the car, and this is where referral maths most often goes wrong in public. The benefit does not reduce the purchase price, the amount financed, or the sales-tax base. A $36,990 Model 3 ordered with a referral link is still a $36,990 Model 3 — with a software trial attached. Any page that adds $297 to a trade-in figure or subtracts it from a purchase price is describing something the programme does not do.
