Model Y L at $61,990: the benefit-to-price ratio, calculated
One numerator, two denominators, a 1.7× difference. The variant is also the rare configuration change that adds a referral benefit rather than losing one.
Tesla began US sales of the Model Y L — a stretched, six-seat Model Y — from $61,990 on 2 July 2026. A new price point is a new denominator, so here is the referral benefit expressed against it.
The calculation
The North American buyer benefit is 3 months of FSD (Supervised). FSD has been subscription-only in North America since 14 February 2026 at $99 a month, so the trial displaces about $297:
| Car | Price | Trial as % of price |
|---|---|---|
| Model 3 Standard | $36,990 | 0.80% |
| Model Y L | $61,990 | 0.48% |
A 1.7× difference in relative value, from an identical benefit. The full ladder across five trims is in referral value as a share of the deal.
The eligibility question the variant raises
Model Y is a referral-eligible family, so the likely answer is that the L qualifies. "Likely" is doing real work in that sentence, because Tesla has demonstrated inside the current rulebook that it excludes individual trims: Cybertruck eligibility covers Premium AWD and Cyberbeast but not Dual Motor AWD. Family-level reasoning is therefore not proof.
The check costs nothing: configure through a referral link and look for the benefit line on the order summary before paying. Since a referral cannot be attached after an order is placed, that screen is both the test and the last chance to act on it.
The configuration change that gains a benefit
Here is the part specific to this variant. A six-seat Model Y competes for buyers who would otherwise be shopping Model X — and Model X has been outside the referral programme since March 2026. So moving a third-row requirement from an X to a Model Y L is one of the few configuration changes that adds a referral benefit instead of losing one. On a $61,990 car that is $297 of benefit that simply did not exist on the alternative.
What the ratio should not decide
Whether to use a code: always yes, it is free. What it should inform is how much effort is worth spending. At 0.48% of the transaction, the referral benefit is not a reason to choose the L over another car, to delay an order, or to accept a configuration you do not want. It is worth exactly the forty seconds it takes to open a link before configuring.
Six seats changes the comparison set, not just the price
A denominator is only meaningful next to the alternatives a buyer is actually weighing. At $61,990 the Model Y L sits against three-row rivals rather than against a Model 3, and the referral benefit is the one line item in that comparison that no competitor can match with a discount — because it is not a discount. It is a software trial attached at checkout, which makes it invisible in a price negotiation and worth exactly nothing in a trade-in valuation.
Two caveats the percentage hides
First, the benefit is a subscription trial, not a discount — it does not reduce the price, the financed amount, or the tax base. Second, it converts to a paid $99 monthly subscription at the end of month three unless cancelled, so the trial's own end date is a real number in the model even though it appears nowhere in the ratio.
