No federal EV credit in 2026 — run this checklist before delivery instead
There's no federal purchase credit to claim on a 2026 Tesla order — but two other things on this list are still yours to grab, and one has a real deadline.
The $7,500 new-clean-vehicle credit ended 30 September 2025. If you're ordering in 2026, there is no federal purchase incentive to apply for at checkout — that line item is simply gone, and no paperwork brings it back. That's the bad news out of the way. The rest of this is a short, concrete checklist for what to actually do before and at delivery, given what's still available.
1. Check whether your order qualifies for the loan-interest deduction
If you're financing, a separate federal deduction lets you write off up to $10,000 in auto-loan interest a year on a vehicle assembled in the US, for loans taken out 2025–2028. This isn't automatic — confirm your specific configuration's final-assembly location (it can vary by trim and plant) before you assume it qualifies, and keep every interest statement your lender sends. We work the full math in a companion post.
2. If you need a home charger, don't sit on the Section 30C deadline
The Section 30C credit — 30% of a qualified home charger install, capped at $1,000 — runs only through 30 June 2026 for most taxpayers, pulled forward from a much later original sunset. If delivery is coming up and you don't already have home charging sorted, get your electrician's quote now rather than after the car arrives; a delayed install can mean missing the window entirely. Full eligibility notes and a worked example are in our 30C post.
3. Open your referral link before you touch the configurator
This is the one step that costs nothing and has no deadline pressure, which is exactly why it's easiest to forget: open a verified referral link before you start building your order, so the FSD (Supervised) trial is attached from the start. Configuring first and looking for a link afterward is the most common way buyers lose it. See the full apply-at-checkout steps.
4. Keep your paperwork straight for tax time
None of the above is automatic on your tax return. Save the itemized loan-interest statement from your lender, the dated invoice from your charger installer showing the in-service date (not the purchase date), and the order confirmation showing your referral benefit applied. None of it is worth much if you can't produce it when you file.
The honest summary
A 2026 Tesla order has no federal purchase credit attached to it — full stop. What it can still have, if you do the legwork, is a loan-interest deduction worth up to $10,000, a home-charger credit worth up to $1,000 before the June deadline, and a referral link's FSD trial worth about $300. None of those require you to wait for anything to change; they require you to act on the ones that apply to you before delivery, not after.
