Model Y L just launched — should that change when you order?
We already answered whether the Model Y L is referral-eligible. This is the separate question: does a brand-new trim launch change when you should actually click "order"?
Tesla launched the Model Y L — a stretched, six-seat 2+2+2 version of the Model Y — in the US and Puerto Rico on 2 July 2026, with Launch Series pricing starting at $61,990. If you've already confirmed the referral link's FSD trial applies to it (it does — see our eligibility FAQ for the full breakdown), the next question is a timing one: does a fresh launch change when you should order, versus a standard Model Y you could configure today?
New-trim launches usually mean a Launch Series window first
Brand-new trims commonly ship as a higher-spec "Launch Series" configuration before broader trim and option combinations become available — that pattern has held across recent Tesla launches. If you specifically want a lower-priced Model Y L configuration rather than the Launch Series, ordering the day of launch may mean a narrower set of choices and a longer wait than ordering once the lineup broadens. If the Launch Series spec is genuinely what you want, there's no reason to wait.
The 12-month credit clock is the real deadline, not the launch itself
Here's the timing constraint that actually bites, and it has nothing to do with the Model Y L being new: referral and loyalty credits granted today expire 12 months after the Grant Date, a rule that came out of March 2026's broader referral overhaul. If a friend sends you a referral link now but you're planning to wait for a later, cheaper Model Y L configuration, make sure that gap is under 12 months — or open a fresh link closer to when you actually configure, rather than banking an early one.
What doesn't change no matter when you order
Whether you order the Model Y L on launch week or wait for a broader trim lineup, the mechanics of the referral link stay identical: open it before you configure, build your order in the same session, and confirm the FSD trial line in the order summary before you pay. A new trim doesn't change any of that sequence — only the model badge changes.
Our timing take
- Want the Launch Series spec specifically? Order now — waiting buys you nothing.
- Want a lower-priced Model Y L configuration? Expect the lineup to broaden over time, as it has with past Tesla launches.
- Either way, don't let a referral link sit unused for more than 12 months from its Grant Date.
