Your referral link is a one-time $300 — your charging bill isn't

The referral link gets you a one-time perk. What you pay to charge is the decision you'll actually live with every month after delivery.

It's easy to spend more time thinking about a referral link's one-time ~$300 FSD trial than about a cost you'll face every single month for as long as you own the car: charging. Tesla now runs 60,000+ Superchargers across North America, and a new Model Y has full access to that network — so the network size isn't the question for most Model 3/Y buyers. The question that actually affects your monthly bill is whether the $12.99/month Charging Membership is worth adding.

Who the Membership is actually for

We've worked the full break-even math elsewhere on this site — the short version is that the paid Membership lowers your per-kWh Supercharging rate and pays for itself at roughly 4 or more Supercharging sessions a month. If you're a light second-car driver who mostly charges at home and Superchargers only on road trips, you likely won't hit that threshold and the $12.99/month is a net cost, not a saving. See the full break-even calculation for the exact math and driving patterns.

Why this belongs next to your referral-link decision, not instead of it

The two things aren't in competition — they're sequential. Open your referral link before you configure (it costs nothing and is the highest-value five minutes of your order), and separately, once you know your actual driving pattern, decide on the Membership after a month or two of real charging receipts rather than guessing at delivery. A $300 one-time trial and a $12.99/month recurring decision deserve different amounts of analysis — don't let the exciting one-time number distract you from working out the recurring one.

A simple rule of thumb

Track your first month of Supercharging sessions without the Membership. If you're consistently at 4 or more sessions a month, add it — you'll be ahead within that same month. If you're mostly charging at home and only Supercharging a handful of times a year for road trips, skip it and revisit the decision if your driving pattern changes.
