Model 3 vs Model Y running costs: five myths, and what the numbers actually say

Model 3 and Model Y buyers both land on the same benefit table once they click a referral link, which makes it easy to assume the rest of the ownership math is just as similar. It isn't. Here are five specific claims we hear from cross-shoppers, checked against sourced 2026 figures.
Myth: They cost about the same to drive per mile, since they share most of the platform.
Fact: Not quite. One 2026 spec breakdown puts the Model 3 Premium RWD around 4.1 mi/kWh (~246 Wh/mi) against roughly 3.6 mi/kWh (~278 Wh/mi) for the Model Y in mixed driving — the taller shape and extra weight measurably cost efficiency. At the roughly 18.4¢/kWh US residential average reported for August 2026 — which itself ranges from about 12¢ in North Dakota to over 50¢ in Hawaii — that's about $45 vs $51 per 1,000 miles. Myth: The Model Y must be pricier to insure — it costs more and it's bigger.
Fact: Insurance aggregators show the opposite, or no real gap. Compare.com lists the Model Y averaging $236/month against $255/month for the Model 3; ValuePenguin has the Model Y at $255/month against $282 for the Model 3. Your own quote — driven by your state, record and coverage — is the only number that matters, but "the Y must cost more" isn't a safe assumption.
Myth: Tires cost the same on both — they're both Teslas.
Fact: They don't. The Model Y's extra weight and its common larger-wheel options push tire costs above the Model 3's in every breakdown we found — roughly $250–$300 a tire on a Model 3 against $285–$320-plus on a Model Y, before Performance-trim 20-inch sets. Myth: The referral link's FSD trial makes up for whichever car costs more to run.
Fact: It doesn't move at all. It's a flat ~$297 on either model — see our value-by-model breakdown — so in dollar terms it's identical on a Model 3 or a Model Y. It's actually a slightly larger percentage of a Model 3's price (about 0.71%) than a Model Y's (about 0.63%), simply because the Model 3 costs less to start with. Neither number has anything to do with what either car costs to drive or insure afterward.
Myth: The heavier Model Y wears its battery out faster than the lighter Model 3.
Fact: Tesla's battery and drive-unit warranty doesn't differentiate by model at all — it's structured by trim (Standard/RWD gets 100,000 miles, Long Range/Performance gets 120,000, both with a minimum 70% capacity guarantee) on Model 3 and Model Y alike.
