The Tesla battery-health checklist that actually matters — and the habits that don't

What Tesla's warranty actually promises
Two numbers matter here, and both come from Tesla's own published terms, not a third-party estimate. Tesla's battery and drive-unit warranty runs 8 years, and either 100,000 miles (Model 3 and Model Y Standard/RWD) or 120,000 miles (Long Range and Performance), with a minimum 70% capacity retention guaranteed across that period. (Tesla — Vehicle Warranty.) That 70% is a floor Tesla contractually stands behind, not a typical outcome — which is worth knowing before the next section.
What real, inspected batteries actually look like
One used-EV inspector, Recharged, tested a sample of its own inventory as of 23 July 2026 and found an average 94% remaining capacity (median 95%), with the lowest reading at 70% — right at Tesla's warranty floor — and the highest at 100%. That's one company's own tested stock, not an independent longitudinal study — but it lines up with the shape of the warranty: most cars sit well above the 70% guarantee, not at it.
As an illustration only, not a prediction for your specific car: apply that 94% average to a Model Y rated around 325 miles EPA at delivery, and you'd land near 305 miles of real-world estimate years later. The checklist that actually protects it

Charge to 20–80% most days
Tesla's own owner's manual recommends keeping everyday charging in this middle band for its current packs, reserving a 100% charge for the day you actually need the extra range — a long trip — instead of every night. (Tesla Model 3 Owner's Manual.)

Use scheduled departure for a 100% charge
When you do need a full charge for a trip, Tesla's Departure Time feature can time it to finish shortly before you leave rather than sitting at 100% overnight.

Precondition before Supercharging in the cold
Tesla's built-in Precondition feature warms the pack ahead of a Supercharger stop. It improves charging speed and reduces the stress a cold, fast-charging session puts on the cells.

Don't let it sit near empty for long stretches
The flip side of the same principle: plug in before the pack gets critically low, especially if the car is going to sit parked for more than a few days.

Let the battery-management system do its job
The pack has active thermal management built in. Normal daily driving, occasional Supercharging and the odd 100% charge for a trip are all things it's designed to handle — babying it beyond the habits above isn't necessary.

Skip third-party "battery conditioning" add-ons
Tesla's own guidance doesn't call for external reconditioning services or aftermarket devices to maintain pack health. The built-in software is already doing that work.
What doesn't actually matter as much as people think
A single 100% charge before a trip won't "ruin" your pack, and neither will one Supercharger stop. It's sustained high state of charge combined with heat that stresses cells over time — not an occasional exception to the 20–80% habit above.
