Tesla's March 2026 referral and loyalty overhaul made three concrete changes: it dropped Model S and Model X from referral eligibility, cut the loyalty discount on premium vehicles from $1,000 to $500, and added a 12-month expiry on referral and loyalty credits from the Grant Date. I already have an old referral link saved — does it still work?
The link format itself (ts.la/<code>) didn't change. What changed is the benefit it unlocks and the expiry window: any credit it now grants expires 12 months after the Grant Date, and the benefit is the FSD trial rather than the old cash credit. The link still works; what you get from it is different from before March 2026.
Why were Model S and Model X dropped specifically?
Tesla hasn't published a detailed rationale beyond the program update itself, so we're not going to guess one. What we know for certain is the effect: as of the March 2026 overhaul, S and X buyers get no referral benefit at all, while Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck kept theirs. Is $500 still worth claiming as a loyalty discount?
Yes, it's still real money, but it's now roughly the same order of magnitude as the referral link's own ~$300 FSD trial rather than clearly the bigger of the two amounts. If you were specifically timing an order around the old $1,000 figure, re-run your math at $500 rather than assuming the same math still holds.
What happens if I don't use a credit within 12 months?
It expires. That's the plain answer — there's no grace period described in the program terms we've reviewed. If you're the owner side of a referral, or a buyer who's been handed a link well ahead of an eventual order, check the Grant Date against your actual order timeline rather than assuming it stays valid indefinitely.
The one thing every one of these questions has in common
None of the four answers above change the one action that's still unconditionally worth doing on a 2026 order: opening a verified referral link before you configure. Eligibility for Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck didn't change in this overhaul, only the loyalty amount and the expiry clock did — and neither of those is a reason to skip the link itself.
