Referral rules changed in March 2026 — here's how that should affect when you order

Tesla's loyalty discount on premium vehicles — the credit returning owners get toward a new order — was cut from $1,000 to $500 in the March 2026 program overhaul. That's the single number most worth knowing before you time an order around it. The rest of the overhaul (covered in full in our before/after comparison) swapped the old $1,000 referral cash credit for the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial and dropped Model S/X from the referral program entirely. This post is narrower: given those changes, what should actually move your order date?

The 12-month credit expiry means "collect now, use later" doesn't work

Referral and loyalty credits now expire 12 months after the Grant Date. That's a real constraint if you're the kind of buyer who has a friend or family member send you a referral link months before you're actually ready to configure. If your order is more than a year out, the specific credit attached to a link today may already be expired by the time you use it — open a fresh link close to when you actually intend to order, rather than banking one early.

The loyalty-discount cut weakens "wait for owner status" logic

Some prospective buyers who already own a Tesla (or are about to take delivery of one) plan a second order around loyalty pricing. At $1,000 that discount was worth actively planning around; at $500 it's a smaller piece of a six-figure or five-figure decision, and it's now roughly the same order of magnitude as the referral link's own FSD trial (~$300). If your timing decision was leaning on the loyalty discount alone, run the math again — the referral link plus the current loyalty amount is still worth claiming, just less worth delaying an order over.

Model S/X buyers: don't wait for the benefit to come back

Model S and Model X were removed from the referral-eligible vehicle list in this same overhaul. We don't have visibility into whether Tesla reinstates it later in 2026 — nobody outside Tesla does — so we're not going to speculate a date. The practical takeaway: if you're specifically ordering an S or X, a referral link currently changes nothing about your order summary, and there's no announced timeline suggesting that changes soon.

What doesn't change your timing math

• Open a referral link close to when you're actually ready to configure — don't sit on one past the 12-month expiry.
• Don't delay an order hoping the old $1,000 loyalty amount or the old cash referral credit returns; both were replaced, not paused.
• If you're ordering S or X, treat the referral link as inactive for that order and skip straight to configuring.
